Your windshield protects you from a range of flying debris, wind, and even weather when you drive. Making sure that it, and your advanced driver assistance system, are in great shape is a must. When your windshield is broken, cracked or otherwise compromised and is no longer safe for you to drive with, you do need to have it replaced. With a windshield that is cracked or chipped, it can easily become fully broken which can cause a hazard of the glass breaking and coming into the cabin of the car or becoming so badly cracked or spider-webbed that you cannot see properly out of it. In these cases, it becomes necessary to replace the windshield. In some states, your insurance will cover a full replacement.
In many cases, newer cars do have some sort of an advanced driver assistance system in place that does help you to see behind you, to be warned of other cars, and to see well when you are driving. In cases where you have this sort of system in place, you do need to have it replaced as well. These systems are often in the rearview mirror and do have to be recalibrated after a windshield is replaced if they have not damaged themselves.
With this sort of system, it is going to have to be removed in order to replace the windshield. When the system is taken down it can be knocked out of calibration and it does have to be fully disconnected. This can cause some issues. After the rearview has been put back on the new windshield it may need to be recalibrated to fit your driving style, fit the overall car, and to fit its position on the windshield. In these cases, the manufacturer is going to have an included range of directions to help you learn just how to go about resetting it and getting it ready to drive. You do want to make sure that it is calibrated properly to make sure that it is going to catch things like driver drowsiness and other cars on the road.
